Green Gables Labradoodles breeds authentic Australian Labradoodles. Our Labradoodles have consistent personality traits, coats that are non-shedding, consistent looks and conform to the breed standard.

The Labradoodle puppies began as a cross between the Standard Poodle and Labrador Retriever. Wally Cochran first started this cross breed in Australia in the 1970s. He was prompted to do this by a blind woman who suffered from allergies to dogs. The first mating between the Standard Poodle and Labrador Retriever was successful and produced three low allergy pups. It became readily apparent that the hybrid produced was able to surpass the best qualities of both breeds. This provoked a surge of Labradoodle breeders in Australia. As the first crosses continued, the results were inconsistent with some of the offspring, some being low shedding and allergy resistant while others were not.

Over the years, other breeds have been infused into some of the lines of the authentic Australian Labradoodles. These breeds were carefully chosen to enhance specific characteristics in the Labradoodle. The infused breeds include the Irish Water Spaniel as well as the American and English Cocker Spaniel.

The name Labradoodle was retained because the foundation is and always will be the Labradoodle and Poodle combination. The name Australian Labradoodle has come to represent the multi-generation Labradoodles. Multi-gen doodles have been bred to be human companions and great family dogs. Though careful selective breeding they are consistently low to non-shedding and most have allergy friendly coats. These beautiful animals are very intelligent, non-aggressive and easily trainable.

In the 1980s two research facilities (Tegan Park and Rutland Manor) were developed in Australia to further develop successful Labradoodles. Today, there are many exceptional breeders throughout North America. To ensure that you purchase your Labradoodle from a reputable breeder, be sure your breeder is an accredited breeder member (not just a member) with one of the recognized associations.
